Today, the Dayton company's founders are busy devising a mockup for its technology: A mobile auxiliary power station that affixes to the underside of a semi trailer. The proposed unit would generate power both on and off the road, producing enough renewable energy to power 50 homes per day, Maurer said.

That opens the door for a bevy of potential uses, he said — especially military applications. It should also make it easier for electric vehicle manufacturers to expand into rural areas, where EV charging infrastructure is often underbuilt.
